  • No chewing gum is allowed in school.
  • For safeguarding reasons, there are designated toilets for adults and students around school, all of which have clear signage. Please ensure you use the correct bathroom.
  • Lidless cups/mugs are not allowed around site for health and safety reasons, and we do not provide disposable cups for sustainability. Cups will be provided for tea and coffee during breaks but these cannot be taken away.

Lanyards

As part of our safeguarding policy, all teachers and students MUST wear a lanyard. Everyone will be given a conference lanyard on arrival. Please ensure that you wear the lanyard to DCSPD each day to gain entry.

General information

  • Most people in Shanghai speak Chinese (Mandarin and Shanghainese), although some do also speak English. The area around DCSPD has a large international community so people are familiar with different languages.
  • Public transport is cheap and efficient; the nearest Metro is a 20 minute walk from the hotel, and a 10 minute walk from school.
  • It is not recommended to drink the tap water; please use bottled water. We have several bottled water dispensers around school, so please bring a reusable bottle.
  • Shanghai can occasionally experience air pollution so it is recommended to have N95 masks packed just in case, but most of the festival is held indoors and school has an excellent air filtration system.

Weather

Shanghai in September is usually very warm with occasional rain showers. Average temperatures are 27ºC in the day, and 20ºC at night.

Currency

The currency in China is Renminbi also called Chinese Yuan (CNY).

APPs

If you would like to use APPS to make payments in China, you will need to download AliPay and/or WeChat.

AliPay is probably better for foreigners as you can link a credit card to it. It also has the taxi service program called ‘DiDi’, public transport Metro/Bus payment code, and you can order take-out via this APP.

WeChat can also have a credit card linked to it, but it can be trickier to set up and may require a Chinese national to verify your new account. This is the main messaging service (like WhatsApp) in China, but you can also make payments from this APP.

Clothing

Loose, comfortable clothing for practical work is required during the conference itself. Please note that the air conditioning in buildings can feel cold and so a light jumper or cardigan is recommended.

Other things to bring

  • A refillable water bottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Umbrella/rain jacket
  • Mosquito spray

Around the Marriott and Ramada Hotels

Just a short walk from the hotels are several restaurants, shops, and cafes. Across the Biyun Road/Hongfeng Road junction, and a few minutes walk away, is Manner Coffee, Starbucks and Family Mart. A little further from there is Times Grocery and a pharmacy.

DCSPD is a 15-minute walk from the hotel, but school bus transfer is available from hotel to school and return each day of the conference (included in the participant fee).
